Starr Hayes Shares Her Untold Journey with Michael Jackson and the Jackson Family
What does it really mean to grow up as a Michael Jackson fan and eventually become his friend? In this week’s episode of Club 30s with MJ Fangirl, I sat down with Starr Hayes, a lifelong Jacksons fan whose story feels like something out of a dream. Starr founded one of the very first Jackson fan clubs back in the early 1970s—and over time, that passion led to a genuine friendship with Michael Jackson and the entire Jackson family.
Starr’s journey began the moment she heard “I Want You Back” on the radio. At just eleven years old, she made a promise to herself that one day she’d meet the Jackson 5. Through determination and faith, she made it happen. In the interview, Starr recalls how she unexpectedly met Joe Jackson at a concert and was later invited to meet the group in person. That single encounter changed the course of her life, turning a fan’s dream into a lifelong connection built on love and respect.
Throughout the episode, Starr paints a vivid picture of the Michael Jackson she knew, kind, intelligent, and deeply spiritual. She talks about their conversations on world religions, philosophy, and social issues, giving fans a glimpse of the thoughtful man behind the music. Today, Starr continues to honor the Jackson family’s legacy through her work with Jackson Doll Productions and the Katherine Jackson Coat Drive, a community initiative that provides coats to children and families in need.
